William was one of a number of soldiers from the 3rd Monmouthshires who on 29th December were parading at Elverdinghe Chateau, Belgium, just before going on some home leave, when a few stray German artillery shells, fired from Houthulst Forest, landed in their midst and killed many outright and also wounded several of the men.
They are buried in communal graves in Ferme Olivier Cemetery. There are a number of Tredegar men appearing in these web pages who were with William, and who are also buried with him.

I have found two census records for the above and both show that Thomas and Mary did not have any children of their own, at that time.
