Edwin’s medal index card shows that in March 1920, his sister applied to receive his war medals.

Born at Foxham Lock Cottages, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire on 3 April 1885,
Enlisted at Newport.
Killed in action on 10th May 1915 - France & Flanders.
Buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.

Son of Jacob and Elizabeth Matthews (formerly Thorne) of Foxham, Nr Calne, Wiltshire.
Brother to Ernest Matthews.

Sidney married Jennie Sinclair Anderson on 27th October 1906 at Tredegar Register Office. Jennie was born in Stromness, Orkney on 8th May, 1892 and died on 16th July 1980.
When they married, they lived at 20 Bedwellty Pits, Tredegar and Sidney was a coal miner.
A Merthyr Express newspaper article shows that during the war they lived at 26, Upper Coronation Terrace, Tredegar.

They had a number of children-
Claire, who married a Richard Gregory and had 8 children,
Ernest, who never married,
Kenneth Victor, who married a Kathleen Edna Scannell and had 2 children,
Sidney Herbert, born on 11th May 1911, married Elsie Mary Rutter and had one son called Stanley Herbert Matthews,
Molly, who married Alf McGregor and had 4 sons and,
Barbara, who married a John Lindsey.

Related to Charles and Emily Minty, 19 Troedyrhiwgwair; Lily, Violet, Albert, Percy and William.
Gilbert is either Charles’ son or his nephew - the family connection is confirmed by 1881 Census to an Elihu Minty of Knapps Gate, Wiltshire

Born in Stanford Bishop in 1893, enlisted at Tredegar and lived at Martley, Worcestershire.
Killed in action on 31st July 1917 - France & Flanders.
Commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium.

In 1911, George was a groom, gardener, domestic at Upper Sapey Rectory, Worcestershire.

 

MOORE, Joseph Edward - Private 3569
3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment.

Born in Knighton, Radnorshire, enlisted at Abergavenny and lived in Tredegar.
Died on 29th December 1915 - France & Flanders.
Buried at Ferme Olivier Cemetery, Belgium.

Son of George Moore, Kington, Herefordshire.

Joseph was one of a number of soldiers from the 3rd Monmouthshires who on 29th December were parading at Elverdinghe Chateau, Belgium, just before going on some home leave, when a few stray German artillery shells, fired from Houthulst Forest, landed in their midst and killed many outright and also wounded several of the men.
They are buried in communal graves in Ferme Olivier Cemetery. There are a number of Tredegar men appearing in these web pages who were with Joseph, and who are also buried with him.

Several decades of census reports tend to show that Cyril had no brothers or sisters.

MORGAN, Ivor - Lance Corporal 33322
2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers.

Born in Tregare, Monmouthshire on 6th December 1895
Enlisted in Tredegar.
Killed in action on 4th July 1917 (age 22yrs) - France & Flanders.
Buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium.

Ivor was a well-known young man in the community of Tredegar, Monmouthshire.
He worked as a postal worker, holding several posts during his time before he volunteered for service in the First World War.

His parents were Gertrude Morgan (nee Nash) who’s family were from the Dingestow area, near Monmouth. His Father James Morgan a local Stone Mason who had worked on several houses in Morgan St, Tredegar. One of these, until recently, was owned by his Grand Daughter June Walker, (Nee Morgan) until her recent death in 2012.

James died at the age of 36 on April 7th 1908 his son Hubert died on April 24th 1908 aged 16 months they are buried in Cefn Golau Cemetery with Gertrude who died on 20 April1970 at the age of 94.

Ivor had brothers Percy, Charles, Victor, and Sisters Florence and Maude whom he wrote to regularly from his base in the UK and later from France when he was posted to the front. Ivor wrote several letters to his Sister Maude and her husband Tom Walters, his letters also referred to Tom and Maude’s only son at the time George. They had a further 3 sons, Ivor, Kenneth and John and a daughter Mary.
